International McDermott’s Day

McDermott’s Day

18th January

International McDermott’s, also known as McDermott Day, founded in 2011 by Paul Charles McDermott of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, to celebrate McDermott’s all over the world. It is an where all McDermotts unite, to raise a glass and make a toast to each other – from whoever they are at the time.

On this day, all McDermotts shall:

  1. Raise a glass to all McDermotts around the world in the following order of preference.
    1. Noon GMT – and whatever that equates to in your country so that the entire globe toasts at same time.
    2. Noon in your country – if GMT is impracticable
    3. When ever you want to on this day – at least you took part
  2. Help other McDermotts, either physically, mentally or spiritually. In person or remotely.
  3. Make other McDermotts aware of this day, and encourage them to take part.
  4. If the day falls on a Friday or Saturday, then attempts should be made to find an Irish bar that evening, and sing and dance until the drink runs out or you fall over†

The ‘Commandments’ are still in draft and are being discussed by McDermott’s around the world on their Facebook Group named The McDermott Clan where an event has been created called International McDermott’s Day

Why is it one 18th January?

Choosing a international date is a tough decision, however, it was made quite simple for the creator of International McDermott’s day Paul C McDermott; On 18th January 2011, Paul’s father Terry James McDermott passed away aged 71. So in his name and his honour it was decided to mark this day with with something positive and memorable.

The 18th January is also at the beginning of the year, which is a logical time of the year to celebrate, it is also far enough away from the new year celebrations; leaving enough time for celebrants to get over their “Never drink again” feeling from New Years Eve parties.

It is important to mention that International McDermott’s Day is not about the passing of the creators father, but for all McDermotts around the world to celebrate being a McDermott, and also those that are about to or have become a McDermott through marriage, and also those dearly missed family and friends that were..

What am I meant to do?

On the 18th January, you are to pour a drink (it need not be alcohol) and raise your glass and say cheers! to all the McDermott’s around the world. If the entire globe can do it together at 12:00GMT great, but if that means your country is asleep, wait until you all wake up.

If the day falls on a weekend, then you are expected to find your nearest Irish bar, and attempt to drain the pumps dry.

† McDermott’s must drink responsibly, and remain within the laws of their host country.‡
‡ If you believe that, you’ll believe anything.
